“You should appreciate your grandparents!” says retirement home company
Granny really DOES know best! We retain 22 pieces of advice from our grandparents as we go through life
Pearls of wisdom passed on by our grandparents stay with most of us for the rest of our lives, a study revealed yesterday.
Gems such as ‘practice makes perfect’ and ‘never go to bed on an argument’ are among the tips retained by two thirds of adults for ever.
Researchers revealed the most common advice from grandparents is ‘good manners don’t cost anything’, followed by ‘you can only do your best’.
Ah, good old granny! Such a font of wisdom! Such an enriching force in our lives! Maybe we should look after her better. Maybe we should even put her in a nice new retirement home:
Ali Crossley, executive director of McCarthy & Stone, who conducted the research, said: ‘Even as adults we continue to turn to grandparents for their take on any dilemmas we are facing.
‘Our ageing population also means that we can now benefit from this wisdom and life experience for many more years to come.’
Now, while I do wholeheartedly believe that it’s worth valuing our grandparents, I’m not sure that a generic list of idioms and clichés compiled and nudged into the news by a company advertising retirement homes is the best way to genuinely honour the nation’s nans.
